The
Department of Speech and Language Therapy of the Technological Educational
Institute of Patras accepted its first students in 1996 and is the
first of the three Institutes of higher education in Greece that provide
education in the fields of Speech, Language and Voice disorders. During
the academic year 2011-2012 approximately 650 students are being enrolled
in the program while about 700 have graduated so far.
The recently updated 4-year curriculum of studies is designed to offer
a background academic preparation in the areas of Linguistics, Medicine
and Psychology, followed by courses in the core fields of speech disorders,
language disorders, hearing impairment, and application of new technologies
in the evaluation and treatment of these conditions. The students
of the Department, after completing a core set of required courses,
are expected to engage in 900 hours of supervised clinical practicum
in hospitals, schools of special education, institutions and at the
Speech and Language Clinic of the Technological Educational Institute
of Patras. Clinical practicum is supervised by the certified Speech
Language Pathologists/Therapists who constitute the permanent and
adjunct faculty of the Department.
